Three Arrested After Drug Search in Jackson County’s Balsam Community

BALSAM, N.C. — Three people were arrested following a search at a residence in the Balsam community that reportedly uncovered suspected methamphetamine, fentanyl and approximately $1,000 in cash.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, deputies assisted the North Carolina Department of Adult Corrections Probation and Parole with a home visit Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2026, at a residence where the owner was an active probationer.

The home visit was conducted following reports of drug activity at the residence.

A subsequent search resulted in the seizure of approximately 11.63 grams of suspected methamphetamine, 2.88 grams of suspected fentanyl and roughly $1,000 in cash. Authorities said the drugs and money were suspected of being associated with the sale of illegal narcotics.

Three individuals were arrested as a result of the investigation.

Vanessa Russell was charged with:

  • Possession with Intent to Manufacture, Sell or Deliver Fentanyl
  • Possession with Intent to Manufacture, Sell or Deliver Methamphetamine
  • Possession of Fentanyl
  • Possession of Methamphetamine
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

Garrett Hoyle was charged with:

  • Possession of Methamphetamine
  • Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

Tabitha Henry was arrested on an order for arrest for trespassing.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office credited its patrol deputies with taking a proactive approach to suspected criminal activity and working alongside the Department of Adult Corrections to address concerns involving individuals under the supervision of the corrections system.

Officials also highlighted the cooperation between the two agencies, saying the operation demonstrates the effectiveness of law enforcement working together to address illegal drug activity and protect the community.

The charges are allegations, and all defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
